Create Labs Brings Robotics and VR to the Streets of the Lower East Side

A forecast of cloudiness didn’t put a damper on the 31st Annual Loisaida Festival this past Sunday. Avenue C also known as Loisaida Avenue, which runs through the heart of the Lower East Side community was bursting with song, dance, theater, food and drinks, activism and for the first time, Technology! This year was the first in the festival’s 30 year history where a partnership between LoisaidaInc. and Create Labs brought science and technology to the cultural festival.

Create Labs produced an interactive STEAM zone that featured over a dozen technology exhibits facilitated by local tech startups and education organizations. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Thousands of people of all ages were able to experience virtual reality, robotics, coding, digital music production, tablet based art, gaming, circuitry and even a mobile science lab fueled by vegetable oil.

“Besides the possibility and the science of it, bringing an experience to someone who otherwise might not even leave this very neighborhood is incredible…It broadens the horizons of anyone that tries it.”, stated Carlina Rivera, the Council Member representing New York City’s District 2, shortly after trying the Virtual Reality Deep Sea experience at the STEAM Zone firsthand.

Create Labs produces immersive technology activations in underserved communities across the country with their next stops slated for Houston, Boston and even abroad to London. The minority founded team provides access to cutting-edge technologies, training in future tech skills, and career guidance  to further develop a pipeline for diversity and inclusion in tech.
